2024 NEWPORT LACROSSE SPRING SEASON FAQ

Youth Program Grades K – 8

We are excited for our lacrosse schedule this spring.  We will be fielding teams for the 3/4, 5/6, and 7/8 levels!  We are looking to grow our club even more and be able to field teams at all levels next year.  Please tell your friends, neighbors, and classmates about the great sport of lacrosse, and invite them to join us this spring!

*In the event that we do not have enough players to field a team at any level, that team level may not be able to participate in the GELL schedule.  If this occurs, it may be possible to allow players to “play up” with the next grade level, however this will be at the discretion of the Newport Lacrosse Board.  (7-8 players will not have the option to play up with the high school team.)

K – 2nd Grade
This year, our K-2 program will consist of two mid-week practices and a Saturday game.  The goals of the K-2 program are to introduce young players to lacrosse and to develop basic stick and ball skills in a fun and safe environment.  The K-2 program is overseen by an experienced, adult lacrosse coach and implemented by experienced high school players.  This year, the K-2 program will begin in late February and run through late May.  Our K-2 program participants will need full gear.  If you do not have one, a stick will be provided with your registration fee.  Full set of pads, helmets, mouthguards and athletic protective gear are required. Games are played through Greater Eastside Lacrosse League.

3rd & 4th Grade
Our 3/4 program is developmental with a focus on fundamental skills and the introduction of team offense and team defense.  At this level, games are played on reduced field size with fewer players on the field. This increases focus on player skill development and provides more opportunities to score goals and make saves! Players are evenly divided on teams based on skill as determined by player evaluation during the initial practices. This year teams practice twice a week starting in late February with games on Saturdays starting in March, and extending through May.  Games are played through Greater Eastside Lacrosse League.

5th & 6th Grade
Our 5/6 program is developmental and focus remains on fundamentals and the development of multiple team offense and defense concepts. At this level, we step up to full-size fields and full-sided 10 vs 10 player games.  Players will be divided evenly between teams based on skills evaluation during the initial practices. This year, teams practice 2-3x per week starting in late January with games on Saturdays starting in March and extending through May.  Games are played through the Greater Eastside Lacrosse League.

7th & 8th Grade
Our 7/8 program becomes more competitive while still developing fundamentals and multiple team concepts.  Players will be divided evenly between teams based on skills evaluation during the initial practices. 7/8 teams practice 3 times per week starting in late January.  This year, league games will be on Saturdays starting in March and extend through May.  Games are played through the Greater Eastside Lacrosse League.

*Please note – We are still working out field schedules for K-2 and 3/4. As we receive new field assignments from the BSD and City of Bellevue for March through June, it is possible practice locations and times may shift once we receive the new field assignments.  We will update you as soon as possible.

Tournaments
Traditionally, the 5/6 and 7/8 teams have participated in one or two post-season tournaments – we will determine which tournaments we qualify for once we have final team numbers closer to each event.  These are usually held in June and are local. (We have previously played in the WA Cup held in Issaquah, and the Summer Solstice Tournament held at Star Fire in Tukwila.).   These tournaments are extra-curricular and will require an additional fee.  More information will be coming as we get into the season.

Newport Lacrosse Youth Program is part of the Greater Eastside Youth Lacrosse League (GELL).  GELL includes many of the area’s highly developed lacrosse programs and teams in the Northwest including Bellevue, Eastlake, Issaquah, Mercer Island, Mt. Si, Northshore, the Overlake School, Redmond, Skyline, Tahoma and Woodinville.  GELL specifically serves youth lacrosse K through the 8th grade.
