2022 NEWPORT LACROSSE SPRING SEASON FAQ
Youth Program Grades K - 8
We are excited to resume a “normal” lacrosse schedule this spring. We are also very excited to hopefully field teams at all levels (K-8) for the first time in many years! To do this, we need adequate numbers of players on each roster. Please tell your friends, neighbors, and classmates about the great sport of lacrosse, and invite them to join us this spring!
*In the event that we do not have enough players to field a team at any level, that team level may not be able to participate in the GELL schedule. If this occurs, it may be possible to allow players to “play up” with the next grade level, however this will be at the discretion of Coach Rainville. (7-8 players will not have the option to play up with the high school team.)
K - 2nd Grade This year, our K-2 program will consist of one mid-week practice, and one Saturday practice/scrimmage. The goals of the K-2 progream are to introduce young players to lacrosse and to develop basic stick and ball skills in a fun and safe environment. The K-2 program is overseen by an experienced, adult lacrosse coach and implemented by experienced high school players. This year, the K-2 program will begin in March and run through late May. Our K-2 program participants will not need full gear. If you do not have one, a stick will be provided with your registration fee. Pads and helmets are not needed. Scrimmages will be among our team, and with neighboring clubs as available.
3rd & 4th Grade Our 3/4 program is developmental with a focus on fundamental skills and the introduction of team offense and team defense. Players are evenly divided on teams based on skill as determined by player evaluation during the initial practices. This year (2022) teams practice twice a week starting in late January with games on Saturdays starting in March, and extending through May. Games are played through Greater Eastside Lacrosse League.
5th & 6th Grade Our 5/6 program is developmental and focus remains on fundamentals and the development of multiple team concepts. Players will be divided evenly between teams based skills evaluation during the initial practices. This year, teams practice twice per week starting in late January with games on Saturdays starting in March and extending through May. Games are played through Greater Eastside Lacrosse League.
7th & 8th Grade Our 7/8 program is developmental and focus remains on fundamentals and the development of multiple team concepts. Players will be divided evenly between teams based skills evaluation during the initial practices. 7/8 teams practice 3 times per week starting in late January. This year, league games will be on Saturdays starting in March and extend through May. Games are played through the Greater Eastside Lacrosse League.
*Please note – current practice times are set through the end of February. We will receive new field assignments from the BSD and City of Bellevue for March through June. It is possible practice locations and times may shift once we receive the new field assignments. We will update you as soon as possible.
Traditionally, the 5/6 and 7/8 teams have participated in one or two post-season tournaments. These are usually held in June and are local. (We have previously played in the WA Cup held in Issaquah, and the Summer Solstice Tournament held at Star Fire in Tukwila.). These tournaments are extra-curricular and will require an additional fee. More information will be coming as we get into the season.
Newport Lacrosse Youth Program is part of the Greater Eastside Youth Lacrosse League (GELL). GELL includes many of the area’s highly developed lacrosse programs and teams in the Northwest including Bellevue, Eastlake, Issaquah, Mercer Island, Mt. Si, Northshore, the Overlake School, Redmond, Skyline, Tahoma and Woodinville. GELL specifically serves youth lacrosse 3rd through the 8th grade.

Our high school program includes two teams:
All high school players must attend tryouts the first week in March.
High school players practice M-F evenings at Newport High School starting the February 28, 2022. Varsity travel is not included in the spring registration fee.
Newport High School plays games through the Washington High School Boys Lacrosse Association.
This year, NLAX will be including a new branded gear bag for all HS players. Additionally, we intend to provide decals for helmets to include player numbers and the Newport logo. Players are expected to have a red helmet. If purchasing new gloves, please buy red or white colors if possible.
Players are expected to wear Newport practice shorts for all practices. Only Newport branded gear will be allowed at practice. (Do not wear shorts, shirts, pinnies, etc that you may have obtained from other teams you have played on.) Players should wear either NLAX branded gear, or un-branded gear in Newport colors (red, black, or white). Additional NLAX practice shorts and swag will be available through the on-line team store that will open in January.
